The New Yorker // Saturday 8pm @ Mercury Lounge

Hey folks,

How are you? Hope you weren't maliciously trampled on Black Friday... though I'll proudly admit to owning a Tickle Me Elmo. SO FUN!

Whenever we get a mention in the New Yorker, it's a big deal so today's a happy day (unlike Yom Kippur). I know how busy things get in the holiday season, so I really appreciate you coming out to see the huge rock n roll show Saturday night at Mercury Lounge with the full band and horns. It's an important gig for us and it personally means a lot to have you there and spreading the word to a few friends by forwarding this email or sharing the FB event. And please let me know if you want to help our Street Team prep for the show. We'll have a Santacon Afterparty, an onstage life-size Nativity Scene, and beats dropping like Pokeman references at a Herman Cain speech. BOOM.

Hm what else... Surprisingly loved the movie Hugo though itching to get some Muppets action, caught docs on Frank Lloyd Wright and Lewis & Clark, vibing on "Reckoner" & "Bells of Rhymney". And later on this month we'll be playing a Holiday Jamboree to benefit NY CARES. Hope you're doing well friends and stay warm this holiday season.

All the best,
D

#Press // Harrison Ford // Saturday Dec 10, 8pm @ Mercury Lounge

Hey folks,

As I roll out of bed at noon, plop on the couch next to Maxwell Silver Hammer and bury my arm in an old box of Cheddar Chex Mix watching season two of Arrested Development, I can't help but contemplate the beauty and terror of complete freedom. I also wonder if there's any spicy hummus left in the fridge.

You should know I've been working soundly, composing new Beatlesque ditties for our indie label debut this Spring. And of course looking for new work since getting sacked by the US House of Representatives after five years. But I think in different ways we're all feeling sacked by the establishment we're inheriting. As Bobby Dylan says "Oh ev’ry foe that ever I faced/ The cause was there before we came/ And ev’ry cause that ever I fought/ I fought it full without regret or shame." The good news is that we're the most educated, innovative, optimistic, peaceful generation to ever emerge on the planet (watch some TED talks), and we sincerely understand humanistic moral values and its role in the marketplace, even if we're too obsessed with 80s culture.

I believe this issue is resonating so deeply because it's utterly non-partisan, and we see how quickly things can actually change - Mubarak in Egypt was overthrown in 18 days. So there's good reason to ignore the nonsense in Washington and the tabloid media, artificially creating divisions within us to increase readership and campaign contributions. None of it is real, but we are. So I marched across the Brooklyn Bridge (check out Image 4), and we had a hugely successful Laid Off Tour across the northeast. Now as a capstone to 2011, I invite you to join the full band and horns for a wild night of solidarity and 60s-influenced R&B, folk and old-school rock n roll...

The Laid Off Tour Finale: Tonight in Washington

Hey folks,

Over the past three weeks, from New York to Boston and now on my way to our nation's capital, I've been listening to people's stories, singing songs like this, and sharing my opinions with Washington's TBD, ASCAP Playback Magazine, Harvard Chronicle, DC Rocks, Cloture Club and more to come.

As it turns out, participating in a dialogue with you about losing my job and our broken system has opened a thousand doors that started with a closed one. And after we wrap up the Laid Off Tour tonight, there's nothing to do but find a new job (I'm not a bum) and keep on keepin on. After five years in the workplace, I understood the struggle to find meaning and humanity in the daily grind, subway rides and long days. To see light in the future while trying to pay rent and live up to the education we're all still paying for. To zoom out and take the long perspective about our short time on this place and what really matters through today's 24-hour culture.

The good news is that every day we can choose to inch our way toward the idealistic vision of ourselves and the world we walk in. We can choose to live without succumbing to an industrial complex that maximizes profit at the cost of our humanity by stressing self-reflection and communal understanding. That's the message I'll be pounding home in Washington tonight with our nine-piece band and horns, and I encourage everyone to do the same moving forward in our own unique way. If you got a sec, would love your help forwarding or posting the show today to friends in Washington...

I've also been nerding out to Ken Burns' Civil War series, hanging at Conan's gay wedding, and stuck in a snowstorm at Salem, MA for Halloween. Thanks again folks for all your support through this ordeal, and as Pete Seeger says, "Take it easy, but take it."

All the best,

NY Daily News / #occupyCMJ Sat 7:30pm @The Living Room

Hey folks,

I honestly wasn't expecting this much free beer, and I kindly accept. You should know that your overwhelming response to my recent job loss for a US Congressman led to these features in the NY Daily News (whose Elizabeth Olsen?), Forbes Magazine and an exclusive interview at Mp3.com. So a sincere thanks to you, and please continue the dialogue.
- Hide quoted text -

I got into a great conversation with a friend last night. I can understand and respect a conservative, individualistic position - I worked for my dime, and I'm gonna keep it. I think what's being missed here is that people aren't successful on their own, whether we know it or not. We're nurtured by an infrastructure to rise up the economic ladder - our schools, our community, our government protections. Now, for the first time in our history, those who have benefited at the very, very top refuse to buy back into our collective system and it's cost us our middle class. One great point you've brought up is that even young people in the finance industry aren't immune from the one percent bubble. I'm not for equal distribution, I believe in self-responsibility. Yet what the "American Dream" really means is equal opportunity, and that's what's at stake. We could all use a little perspective.

I believe our faith in government has been lost because we're stripping paltry resources from the disenfranchised and those who need it most while millionaires enjoy tax breaks, deregulation and massive corporate profit on our own backs. Now that's "wasteful spending." You could argue that Obama's actually done very well within the existing framework having passed the most legislation since LBJ, but we gave him a mandate to transform the system itself. Now we'll have to revert to these Great Depression-era baby names.

I agree it doesn't help anyone that Zucatti Park looks like Shakedown Street at a Phish concert. But great movements don't start by focusing on legislative prescriptions. They start by individuals speaking up; policy comes later. So let's speak up loudly about the lack of equal opportunity, affecting us through student loans or starting a business. Let's speak loudly how the walls of access are too high. And let's show vigor through a renewed sense of idealism - our generation at least deserves a crack at it. I try to do so through playing the kid's rock n roll music with their complicated shoes, and I invite you to join us Saturday night at the CMJ Music Festival. And no matter where you stand, please continue the conversation on our FB page.

How I Got Laid Off

Hey folks,

Last week I was reluctantly let go from my position at a NYC Congressman's office after five years of service -- a position I held alongside the pursuit of music and ultimately lost from severe budget cuts. Now don't worry about me, I'm doing just fine, if only trying to wrap my head around how the men touting job creation just literally took mine away. In either case, at the age of twenty-seven, I find myself out of work. I now have no income stream, no savings, no benefits and loads of college debt. I'll have to figure how to pay rent, afford Hulu Plus to see the latest Parks and Rec, and provide generally for my Brooklyn household (girlfriend + cat). From the statistics alone I know almost every one of us on this 3,500+ list suffer from some version of this mess.

It's made worse in that I was given the built-in advantages for the modern global economy - a white male raised in a comfortable suburb with a world-class education. But something much broader is happening here. My friends who are passionate about law and medicine are spending years and small fortunes on graduate programs with little assurance of economic stability. My friends working as teachers, non-profit workers, public servants and social workers are lucky to survive while trying to do a very basic good. Entrepreneurs and small business owners are stonewalled by the mere financial barriers of entry. The price of access is too high to even begin. As my musician friends can attest, the costs to record and market an album, hire a band and play shows out of town are incomprehensible. I potentially have a very big opportunity to make a record with a label this winter, but it could bankrupt me. Unless, of course, Pitchfork decides I'm the harbinger of cool.

We're not class warriors, I too would like to be filthy rich. But it seems that unless we either work in financial services or have a tremendous amount of start-up capital and access, the walls of access right now to the American Dream are too high. I'm not here to make the substantial statistical case for unique economic inequality in our time. But I shouldn't have to spend the rest of my life paying for an education that won't guarantee any future stability. I shouldn't be forced to work in the finance sector in order to feel merely financially secure. I shouldn't have to wish I was born on the right side of the street in order to access the simplest form of equal opportunity that our parents did. Rags-to-riches stories have gone the way of the cassette tape.

Together, we have to remember that it's vocalizing our demands as a generation on Facebook and on the street that leads to political action, and not the other way around. Civil rights marchers couldn't wait around for JFK, and young people today can't wait around for Obama. So go post this clip with something snarky, it works all the time at Knicks games. Or do something else - buy an ice cream cake! I express my voice through our rock n roll band and horns, and ask you to join me. Let's Occupy the CMJ Festival for FREE next week in NYC, then Boston and Washington.

Gasp, Summer Finale?! Tues 9pm @ Living Room // Sat with Dave Mason

Hey folks,

How are you? I'm schvitzing like a schvitz out here. It's so hot Lady Gaga left home the meat suit. It's so hot today I saw an Amish guy buying an air conditioner. Or as they say down south, it's hotter than a pair of sweat pants full of barbecue.

I have some bittersweet news friends, the band is wrapping up the summer. I know! But we have to decompress in Mantauk just like everyone else. So don't miss our Living Room Residency Finale on Tuesday night as we round out epically with some favorite artist friends. And before that, we open for rock god Dave Mason Saturday night at City Winery. This guy's a monster from the 60s and 70s, check his wiki page.

  • "The 60s are making a comeback, and singer/songwriter Danny Ross' unique voice and style would have made John Lennon proud. A New York-based musician with a sound proportionate to his city’s size. What strikes us most about Ross is not that his songs have been featured on various television shows, but that his lighthearted sense of humor and kind determination are drawing as much attention as his talent." - The Daily Br!nk (With exclusive acoustic video of "Faultlines")
  • "Melding lyrical nakedness with ambitious arrangements and pure imagination, Danny Ross builds a sound that’s completely his own – and yet awfully familiar." - Best New Bands
  • "We asked our fellow young creative Brooklynites to spill the beans about how they're trying to make their dreams come true and where they think their lives will lead." - Overflow Magazine
Oh and our original musical staged last week was a big hit on Broadway, at least according to my parents. As always, your work as a footsoldier in the Ross Revolution does not go unnoticed. Atten-hut!

Hey folks,

Now that we've plunged head-first into "Schvitz Summer" (Trademarked), I see you finally agree with my series of academic lectures that the government controls the weather. Very good. And of course Bin Laden's death was a hoax and we all died savagely on May 21st. It's a fact people.

More the reason to join me, Danny Ross of stage and screen, for an explosive live show with the 9-piece Saturday Night Band and Horns, brand new songs and an array of wild circus animals. Oh, and I composed a musical debuting on Broadway this Thursday night! It spans the entire range of human emotion in 10 minutes, but don't call me Sondheim. Seriously it's pronounced DAN-NY.

VH1 Storytellers: Saturday 11 @ The Living Room // Motown Philly

Hey folks,

What's the deal with this weather? First it's hot, then it's not so hot with the rain and the grey and the wet. Like a mushy Schimmel's knish. I am right or am I right.... But seriously, is I'm right? Not sure when I turned into a borscht-belt shoemaker but we can all agree, at least I'm not this guy. Speaking of drunk-dialing, come see my show!

  • "Ross inherits a clear Beatles influence that runs through the tracks accompanied by touches of alt-country artists such as Ryan Adams and Wilco as well as ‘60s soul that coalesce into dynamic, lush piano-pop... One Way, with its eclectic nature, may just be his White Album, a pleasing presentation of a wide range of fine songwriting." -- Deli Magazine NYC Feature "Danny Ross: Pop Chameleon"
  • "It was clear that the crowd got into the music quickly and stayed with him from the opening number to the last song. Ross was interested in creating his own sound… He stayed true to his word, putting on quite a show and enjoying the hell out of it. Saturday 11pm - Headlining Mercury Lounge for Live Album Recording [in 3D]

Hey folks,

I'm gonna be perfectly honest with you here. I'm a little sleepy. You're right, I celebrated National Pancake Week with a little too much gusto this year, and it didn't help that I was simultaneously engineering the Carmelo Anthony trade. But what I'm truly exhausted from is preparing the most stimulating night of sight and sound since Rick Moranis wowed America with "Suddenly Seymour."

That's right, we're recording a live album Saturday night at NYC's legendary Mercury Lounge with the nine-piece band and horns! Look for Steven Segal on bass. And I'm asking the audience to record the music video on your cell phones and Flip Cams. Hear yourself "Woooo" in real time audio...

Danny Ross and the Saturday Night Band Live Album Recording @ Mercury Lounge!
Saturday February 26, 11pm Sharp// Followed by high school bandmates Mercury Landing~
@ Mercury Lounge, 217 Houston St at Essex NYC
* This show will likely sell out, please get Advanced Tickets Here.

We want this record to be on par with 1986's ABBA Live. So, as I've been telling friends, I hate to ask for the help but it's a huge show (and album) for me and it would mean the world if you could help pack the place by bringing a few close BFFs. You can click "Select Guests to Invite" on the left or 'Share' on top of our Shmancy FB Event Page. Thanks again guys, see you at the spot.

PS - And thanks Boston for packing the Middle East last week, snarky videos to come. Because of you we'll be headlining a Saturday night in the very near future. DC and Philly, you're next. MUHAHAHA

Do You uhh Have Friends in uhh Boston? // Live Album Show Sat Feb 26 at Mercury Lounge!

Hey folks,

How's stuff and things? First off, we're playing our Boston debut this Sunday night 8pm at the famous Middle East. To prepare, I'm dusting off my copy of With Honors and priceless footage of Boston Terriers. I should also hide my "Patriots and Red Sox are Inferior Teams" coffee mug. Yikes.

Do you have a few close friends in beantown? It's our first out-of-town show ever at a major venue and I only know a handful of folks out there. I hate to ask for your help and want to thank you in advance, but would you mind quickly forwarding this email or inviting them via our FB Event Page?

And secondly, we're capping off the winter with our BIGGEST NYC SHOW EVER. In fact, it's so big we're recording it for a live album to be released this summer, and I want you to bring your mobile devices and Flip Cams to shoot the video for us. The full band and horns, new songs, all the hits and the Rockettes? This show will sell out so please get Advanced Tickets Here.

Saturday 8pm @ Rockwood Stage 2 // Duet with David Bowie

Hey folks,

What the hell. Why is everyone getting sick this time of year. And by everyone I mean me. I know what you're thinking: "But Danny, you're like Superman, or more like that nerdy jewish guy in the Green Hornet. You should be healthy as a clam." Now folks, I don't claim to know the immune systems of most shell fish - only Rocky Mountain Oysters (props midwesterners!). But I do know three things: 1) How to write three bitchin new songs for the Saturday Night Band and 2) How to put on a rock n roll show to make you drop out of law school and wish you never heard of tort reform. Just don't join the mob.

Thankfully I'm back to full health so we'll be back back in Cali Cali. See you for our debut gig at this beautiful new masterpiece venue the Rockwood folks put together. And what's that? The third thing I know? Karate. I have a white belt in karate.

PS - I know Rex is keeping his mouth shut for those reverent classy Steelers, but I have no such hesitation. Those yellow towels really are terrible, hardly absorb anything. Try Bounty, the quilted quicker picker-upper... Nailed em, go Jets!

2011 Heaven // Saturday Jan 22nd 8pm, Rockwood Stage 2

Hey folks,

Happy new year old friends and fellow foot-soldiers of the Ross Revolution. Since we last spoke in December, I played backgammon with Mike Bloomberg as Brooklyn was irrevocably destroyed by blizzard, directed a foot fetish video with Rex Ryan's wife, and wept with John Boehner as he took this oversized mallet. (Insert "Compensating much?" joke here)

Oh, and you scrappy mothers raised an army of 800 unique voters to name us Deli Magazine's Artist of the Month and be on their year-end list of top NYC bands. Thank you guys and dolls, you'll see below we'll need you even more in 2011 to achieve Pinky and The Brain-style world domination. In the meantime, our famous Saturday night Band opens the year with a huge debut gig at everyone's favorite new venue featuring world premiere songs. And it's free homie gee!

And if you like The Beatles (Hi, I'm Earth) and you like ukulele, come see me open for Ben Kweller and Nellie McKay @ Brooklyn Bowl this Saturday night 1/15 8pm. Here's a cut we made of "Baby's in Black" a few months back. Catch ya later, crocodile.
